At United International College, learning goes far beyond the traditional classroom experience. In Dr. Marcela Moyano’s Radio and Podcasting course, students explored the history of the radio industry, studied the theory and structure behind successful podcasts, and transformed their ideas into fully produced original shows.
Throughout the semester, students learned every stage of podcast production—from storytelling and scripting to recording, editing, branding, and promotion. The course combined academic foundations with hands-on creative work, allowing students to experience what it truly means to produce media in today’s digital landscape.
One of the highlights of the semester was a field trip to WLRN Public Radio and Television, where students met with professionals working in the public media industry. During the visit, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the production process behind professional podcasts and radio programming. They spoke with Katie Muñoz, Director of News, and Peter, Vice President of Radio, gaining valuable insight into audio storytelling, journalism, and audience engagement.
As part of their coursework, students also listened to and analyzed WLRN podcasts on a weekly basis. One of the class favorites was The Killer Train, the Pulitzer Prize-winning podcast produced by Daniel Rivero and Joshua Ceballos. Through these analyses, students examined narrative structure, sound design, investigative reporting, and the emotional impact of storytelling through audio.
During the final four weeks of the semester, students released original podcast episodes and developed complete brand identities for their shows. In addition to production skills, students learned how to create podcast artwork and promotional campaigns using Canva. Each student developed a unique visual identity and promotional strategy for their podcast.
The course reflects UIC’s commitment to experiential learning. Students do not simply study media theory—they actively design, create, and publish professional-quality content that reflects their passions, creativity, and perspectives. Through this hands-on approach, students gain real-world experience that prepares them for careers in media, communication, and digital storytelling.
