From Theory to Airwaves: UIC Students Launch Original Podcasts in Dr. Marcela Moyano’s Radio and Podcasting Class

At United International College, learning goes far beyond the traditional classroom experience. In Dr. Marcela Moyano’s Radio and Podcasting course, students explored the history of the radio industry, studied the theory and structure behind successful podcasts, and transformed their ideas into fully produced original shows.

Throughout the semester, students learned every stage of podcast production—from storytelling and scripting to recording, editing, branding, and promotion. The course combined academic foundations with hands-on creative work, allowing students to experience what it truly means to produce media in today’s digital landscape.

One of the highlights of the semester was a field trip to WLRN Public Radio and Television, where students met with professionals working in the public media industry. During the visit, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the production process behind professional podcasts and radio programming. They spoke with Katie Muñoz, Director of News, and Peter, Vice President of Radio, gaining valuable insight into audio storytelling, journalism, and audience engagement.

As part of their coursework, students also listened to and analyzed WLRN podcasts on a weekly basis. One of the class favorites was The Killer Train, the Pulitzer Prize-winning podcast produced by Daniel Rivero and Joshua Ceballos. Through these analyses, students examined narrative structure, sound design, investigative reporting, and the emotional impact of storytelling through audio.

During the final four weeks of the semester, students released original podcast episodes and developed complete brand identities for their shows. In addition to production skills, students learned how to create podcast artwork and promotional campaigns using Canva. Each student developed a unique visual identity and promotional strategy for their podcast.

The course reflects UIC’s commitment to experiential learning. Students do not simply study media theory—they actively design, create, and publish professional-quality content that reflects their passions, creativity, and perspectives. Through this hands-on approach, students gain real-world experience that prepares them for careers in media, communication, and digital storytelling.

A Milestone Celebration: UIC Marks 25 Years While Honoring the Class of 2026

Dania Beach, FL – United International College (UIC) proudly celebrated its 24th Commencement Ceremony, marking a significant milestone as the institution also commemorates its 25th Anniversary. The ceremony brought together graduates, families, faculty, and community leaders to honor the achievements of the Class of 2026.

The keynote address was delivered by Dania Beach Mayor Joyce Davis, who inspired graduates with a message of resilience, purpose, and lifelong learning. Welcoming UIC to the community, she expressed, “We are so proud to have your campus in our city.”

In her remarks, Mayor Davis emphasized that graduates stand “at the intersection of passion and purpose” and shared key guiding principles: to continue learning and remain curious, to stay true to one’s values, and to recognize that coming from a small place does not limit one’s potential. She also reminded graduates, “What you have earned is not something that anyone can take from you.”

Adding a powerful closing message, she shared, “The last pillar of the four is that your beginning doesn’t define your end,” encouraging students to embrace growth and transformation throughout their lives.

Reflecting on her personal journey growing up in a small town in Indiana, Mayor Davis spoke about embracing diversity and overcoming feelings of being different. She credited her mother’s belief in her as a driving force behind her success and encouraged graduates not to underestimate their voice or potential.

Graduate speaker Luiz Renaud of Brazil, who earned his MBA, addressed the class, highlighting the transformative impact of his education at UIC. “UIC taught us how to see opportunities when others see obstacles,” he said.

Undergraduate speaker Carolina Posse from Colombia, representing the Travel and Tourism Associate Program, shared her personal journey of growth and perseverance. “I came to the United States to improve my English, never imagining that I would soon join UIC to study Travel and Tourism,” she said. “It was not easy—we didn’t just learn theory; we learned consistency and how to adapt when things didn’t go as expected.” She reminded her peers that success is not linear, adding, “It doesn’t matter how many times you have to start over—what matters is how much you believe in your dreams.” She concluded by noting that the ceremony celebrated not just degrees, but the collective achievements of international students pursuing their aspirations in the United States.

The ceremony also featured a special performance of the national anthem by International Business Management bachelor’s degree alumnus Alin Turculescu of Romania. A commemorative video showcasing messages and well wishes from graduates was presented in celebration of UIC’s 25th Anniversary and in honor of President and Co-founder Lydia Bautista Moller.

Members of the Board, Dr. Lina Maria Moyano and Dr. Marcela Moyano, were in attendance, along with Dr. Ted Abernethy, Director of Athletics, and distinguished faculty members, including Prof. Fernando Rosero, Dr. Chee Piong, Dr. Deborah Mendez, Prof. Jack Rose, Prof. Lourdes Collazo, and Prof. Andre Noudjo, and Prof. David Lesser.

The 24th Commencement Ceremony highlighted UIC’s continued commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and empowering students from around the world to achieve their personal and professional goals.

A Transformational Gathering: Inside the 1st UIC International Summit Bogotá 2026

A Transformational Gathering: Inside the 1st UIC International Summit Bogotá 2026

From the moment we arrived at Unilatina in Bogotá, we could feel great ideas and conversation rising above 2600 meters closer to the stars. What began as months of planning quickly turned into a meaningful, beautifully curated experience. Thanks to the dedication and collaboration of United International College and Institución Universitaria Latina Unilatina, every detail was thoughtfully executed—from the elegant setup of the venue to the successful delivery of all our marketing materials.

We unveiled a custom magazine pop-up box, a striking Bogotá-themed banner, and handcrafted awards of recognition for our panelists—each element designed to celebrate ideas, people, and purpose.

A Keynote Rooted in Legacy and Purpose

Our first guest to arrive was Gustavo Villota, founder of Café San Alberto and keynote speaker of the summit. His presence felt deeply symbolic.

The connection went beyond professional admiration. The story behind Café San Alberto—named in honor of his uncle Alberto—resonated on a personal level. It echoed a shared belief in legacy, remembrance, and purpose. In a powerful and emotional way, this encounter reminded us how deeply human stories can shape entrepreneurial journeys.

Gustavo shared how he built Café San Alberto into more than a brand—it is an experience. From its signature purple identity to its “coffee temples,” every detail invites visitors to slow down and engage all their senses. This is not just coffee; it is ritual, storytelling, and connection.

His key message was clear: Consumers today value authenticity, family legacy, and purpose-driven brands far more than mass-produced offerings.

Tourism in Bogotá: Growth with Responsibility

The Tourism Panel featured Maria Fernanda Prieto, Senior Communications Consultant of Babel Communications; Ivonne Martinez, Intelligence Subdirector of the Distrita Institute of Tourism of Bogota; and Julian Rodriguez, adventurer, entrepreneur, and author of Ruta 56, who explored Bogotá’s rapid growth as a global destination.

They emphasized the importance of balancing tourism expansion with community protection, ensuring that local culture and identity remain intact. A highlight of the session was the screening of the “Welcome to Bogotá, Tu Casa” campaign, which offered international students and visitors a compelling introduction to the city’s warmth and vibrancy and brought by the Instituto Distrital de Turismo de Bogotá.

New Media, Film, and the Power of Narrative

In a dynamic conversation led by Dr. Marcela Moyano, Director of Communication of United International College, and Armando Bolaño Rangel, Founder of Cayeye Foundation, the summit explored how media and storytelling are shaping modern realities.

Armando highlighted the responsibility of filmmakers and influencers to use their platforms to promote positive narratives and social change. He also stressed the importance of film festivals and physical gathering spaces as essential hubs for collaboration, dialogue, and creative growth in an increasingly digital world.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship Across Cultures

Entrepreneur Monica Miranda shared an inspiring story of innovation and resilience. Her business bridges Colombia and Japan, cultivating Japanese flowers year-round in El Rosal, Cundinamarca, for export back to Japan.

Her journey highlighted the complexities of intercultural collaboration, from communication challenges to operational alignment. Yet, through persistence and vision, she has built a flourishing enterprise with a global logistics footprint extending into the United States.

Expanding Horizons: Studying in the United States

The summit concluded with a powerful session on global education led by Liliana Báez, Founder of Genoma del Ser, and Angelica Moyano, Director of Academic Affairs of United International College.

They guided students through the process of becoming international students in the United States—from preparing for visa interviews to adapting to life abroad. Personal testimonies from UIC students, Filip Sanda from Czech Republic, and Cesare Ciccotti from Italy, who added authenticity and inspiration, reinforcing the transformative power of international education.

A Celebration of Connection and Community

Beyond the panels, the summit created space for meaningful interaction. Students connected with speakers, took photographs, and engaged with the first edition of the UIC Summit Magazine Pop-Up Box, capturing moments that will become part of the summit’s legacy.

A special highlight of the experience was the contribution of the culinary students from Institución Universitaria Latina Unilatina, who prepared a selection of exquisite appetizers for the event. Their creations not only elevated the atmosphere but also showcased the exceptional talent, creativity, and technical skills fostered within their culinary program. Each bite reflected a commitment to excellence and offered guests a taste of the next generation of gastronomic professionals.

With an attendance of nearly 200 participants, the event exceeded expectations and confirmed the importance of creating platforms for dialogue, innovation, and global exchange. United International College is grateful to Invest in Bogotá, who partnered with the 1st Edition of the Summit and brought exposure and guidance to elevate the production of the event.

Closing the Night: A Bogotá Experience to Remember

To celebrate the success of the summit, the team gathered at Andrés Carne de Res, one of Bogotá’s most iconic cultural dining experiences. The evening was filled with music, celebration, and a moving tribute by César Mora honoring the late Willy Colón.

Looking Ahead

The 1st UIC International Summit Bogotá 2026 was more than an event—it was a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and purpose. It brought together voices from across industries and countries, creating a shared space to imagine a better, more connected future.

And this is only the beginning.

Exploring the Power of Media: UIC Students Go Behind the Scenes at WPLG Local 10

Hallandale, FL — At United International College (UIC), learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through immersive, real-world experiences, students are given the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders, explore professional environments, and envision their future careers. This commitment to experiential education was on full display during a recent visit to WPLG Local 10 News in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

A Journey Through Broadcast History

Upon arrival, students were warmly welcomed and introduced to the rich history of WPLG Local 10. The visit began with a compelling timeline presentation that highlighted key milestones in the station’s evolution, including ownership transitions and its role in covering major events impacting South Florida.

One particularly powerful moment in the presentation reflected on the impact of Hurricane Andrew. In response to the devastation caused by the storm, the station invested in generators to ensure uninterrupted broadcasting—demonstrating a deep commitment to keeping the community informed even during times of crisis. This story resonated strongly with students, reinforcing the critical role media plays in public safety and community resilience.

Inside the Newsroom: Where Stories Come to Life

Students then stepped into the heart of the station—the newsroom. Walking among reporters’ desks, they witnessed the fast-paced daily operations of a professional media environment. From story development to real-time collaboration, students gained insight into how news is researched, written, and delivered to millions of viewers.

The experience continued in the engineering department, where students met the Master Control Engineer. With enthusiasm and clarity, he explained the technical backbone of broadcasting, including programming, rundowns, and the coordination required to maintain seamless live transmission. His passion for the field was evident, as he thoughtfully answered every student’s question, turning curiosity into inspiration.

Live from the Control Room

One of the most exciting moments of the tour came as students entered a control room during a live noon newscast. There, they observed the director and producer orchestrating the broadcast in real time—issuing commands, coordinating the crew, and integrating content seamlessly into the show.

This behind-the-scenes access offered a rare glimpse into the precision, teamwork, and intensity required to deliver live television—an unforgettable experience that brought classroom concepts vividly to life.

Meeting the Faces of Local News

Following the broadcast, students had the opportunity to meet on-air personalities Annaliese Garcia and Eric Yutzy. Fresh off the set, they generously shared insights into their careers and the realities of working in broadcast journalism.

Annaliese Garcia, a proud University of Miami alumna, encouraged students to embrace challenges and step outside their comfort zones:

“Take the chance to step into the uncomfortable. Go where the opportunities are—even if it means starting in a small town.”

Her message resonated deeply, emphasizing resilience, adaptability, and courage as essential qualities for success in the industry. Students engaged in meaningful conversations with her, gaining valuable perspectives on career growth and professional development.

Weathering the Future: Innovation and Passion

The final stop of the tour brought students to the meteorology department, where they met meteorologists Brandon Orr and Brantly Scott. They shared their educational journeys, discussed the evolving role of artificial intelligence in forecasting, and reflected on their lifelong passion for weather.

Their enthusiasm was contagious as they described the excitement and responsibility of their work—particularly the importance of staying connected to the community and delivering accurate, timely information.

A Meaningful Exchange

The visit was made possible through the leadership of Mayte Padron, Director of Community Relations at WPLG Local 10, who emphasized the value of collaboration between institutions and media organizations:

“We take great pleasure in inviting groups like United International College to our news studio. As we show them what it takes to deliver the news to South Florida homes, we are also learning from them and how they consume news in the 21st century. It’s a mutually beneficial experience that we value tremendously.”

Faculty members Prof. Jack Rose and Dr. Deborah Mendez accompanied the students, further enriching the experience. Reflecting on the visit, Prof. Rose shared:

“The tour was exceptional, and I know the students had a great learning experience. Personally, it was exciting to speak with all those exceptional people who make up the Local 10 team since I have been an avid viewer the past 50 years. The knowledge and enthusiasm of our tour host added much to the tour. I think there are some students who might start thinking about a career in broadcasting.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Experiences like this exemplify UIC’s commitment to bridging academic learning with real-world application. This approach empowers students to explore their passions, build professional connections, and confidently pursue their career goals.

For many students, the visit was more than a tour—it was a moment of clarity, inspiration, and possibility.

Podcasting Students Learn from WLRN Public Radio and Television Professionals

Miami, FL, Feb 11, 2026- Podcasting students in the Communications and Mass Media program at United International College (UIC) recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the professional world during an educational visit to the studios of WLRN Public Radio and Television in downtown Miami. The immersive experience allowed students to tour the facility, meet industry professionals, and engage in meaningful conversations with the production teams and content creators behind one of South Florida’s most respected public media organizations.

The visit began with a session led by James March, Director of Program Acquisitions and TV Promotion, who introduced students to television programming and documentary production at WLRN. He screened a teaser for an upcoming documentary scheduled to premiere on Earth Day and shared insights into the station’s storytelling mission.

Students actively engaged with March, asking thoughtful questions about the documentary production process. He emphasized WLRN’s commitment to telling stories that reflect the people, history, and culture of South Florida.

“Taking the classroom into the real world shakes the students and opens a door for them,” said Dr. Marcela Moyano, Director of the Communications and Mass Media Programs of United International College. “They can connect their in-class learning with their profession and realize that their dreams are possible. Industry leaders become mentors who inspire our students to find their passion and envision themselves in careers they will love for a lifetime.”

The group then toured WLRN’s television and film studios before meeting Peter Maerz, Vice President of Radio. He demonstrated the recording process, introduced students to professional audio consoles, and explained the art of voice-over performance. Maerz also shared his personal journey from radio announcer to executive leadership.

“You have to be a little bit more of yourself when you are behind the mic,” Maerz advised, encouraging students as they prepare to produce their own podcasts.

Students also met MJ Smith, one of WLRN’s radio hosts, who shared practical tips for delivering clear, authentic on-air performances. His enthusiasm and passion for radio left a lasting impression on the group.

Another highlight of the visit was a conversation with Catie Muñoz, Director of Daily News and Original Live Programming. She explained the fast-paced nature of producing live radio newscasts and contrasted it with the strategic planning required to create narrative podcasts such as Killer Train. Muñoz also shared her personal journey into journalism and podcast production, offering valuable advice and inspiration.

UIC students are currently listening to WLRN podcasts as part of their coursework, studying professional journalism techniques, and preparing to produce their own original podcast projects. The opportunity to ask questions directly to experienced journalists and producers provided invaluable real-world insight.

The tour concluded with a visit to WLRN’s awards display, where students learned about the station’s recent honors, including recognition for the documentary Never Drop the Ball, about the Negro baseball league, produced by Michael Anderson and Fabian Cardenas.

UIC student Daniela Lubo reflected on the experience:

“It was a truly incredible experience. Being able to visit the offices and studios of such an important and well-respected public media organization was a real privilege. Having the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the leaders of its different departments and its vice president was deeply inspiring. Listening to people who are not only experts in their field, but also extremely passionate about what they do, makes you feel like you, too, can achieve anything.”

United International College extends its sincere gratitude to the entire WLRN team, especially Suliani van der Biezen, Events and Community Outreach Manager, for generously hosting the students and providing such an inspiring and educational experience.

MCC1000 Students Explore Public Art at the Miami Worldcenter During Art Basel

During this year’s Art Basel, students in MCC1000: Introduction to Mass Communications and Media Literacy participated in a walk tour of the newly developed Miami Worldcenter, engaging directly with public art to deepen their understanding of visual communication and media literacy. The tour offered students the opportunity to explore how artists use public spaces to convey messages, preserve cultural histories, and reflect social issues through creative expression.

Woody De Othello — Some Time Moves Fast, Some Time Moves Slow (2021–2022)

Woody De Othello’s sculptural installation, created during the pandemic, explores the disorienting experience of time when daily routines were disrupted and moments felt both fleeting and endlessly long. Through expressive, anthropomorphic forms, the work captures the emotional weight of an unprecedented global moment.

Zadok Ben-David — Girl on the Run (2022)

Zadok Ben-David’s Girl on the Run portrays a figure captured mid-stride, blending delicacy with energy to evoke a sense of urgency and motion. The sculpture invites viewers to imagine the narrative behind her movement while highlighting Ben-David’s signature focus on human behavior and emotional storytelling.

Hernan Bas — Snow in Miami (2022)

Hernan Bas’s mural Snow in Miami references the extraordinary morning of January 19, 1977, when Miami witnessed its only recorded snowfall. Drawing from this surreal historical event, Bas uses atmospheric imagery to evoke wonder and nostalgia while honoring a unique moment in the city’s past.

Nina Chanel Abney — R&R (2022)

Nina Chanel Abney’s immersive mural R&R responds to the legacies of gentrification and how redevelopment threatens to erase the histories of vibrant Black communities. Through layered imagery and bold color, Abney challenges viewers to consider whose stories are preserved—and whose are overlooked—as cities transform. "The mural location, a tunnel formed by the dark passageway under the building, inspired me to consider the recognition of sacred spaces with story" adds Abney (Miami Worldcenter, 2022).

Serge Toussaint — Welcome to Miami Worldcenter (2023)

Renowned Miami muralist Serge Toussaint brings his signature style to Welcome to Miami Worldcenter, a vibrant, welcoming artwork that celebrates the city’s multicultural identity. The mural highlights Toussaint’s deep connection to Miami’s neighborhoods and reflects the cultural diversity that continues to shape the city.

A Special Guest: Liliana Moyano Shares Industry Insights

Joining the tour was Liliana Moyano, Founder and President of La Perra Films and a member of the Board of Directors of United International College. At the end of the walk, she spent time having coffee with the students and Dr. Marcela Moyano, professor of the course, offering invaluable insights into her career as a producer, director, and screenwriter. Moyano spoke about the creative process behind bringing stories to the big screen and the importance of staying true to one’s message—an inspiring conversation that connected the themes of the tour to real-world media production.

A Public Art Experience Through the Lens of Media Literacy

For MCC1000 students, the tour demonstrated how public art functions as a powerful form of mass communication—shaping public spaces, conveying cultural narratives, and inviting audiences to interpret meaning through visual cues. Students enjoyed the tour and were able to connect the impact of public art, film, and meaningful conversation during Miami Art Week and Art Basel, ultimately strengthening their understanding of how messages are crafted and shared across different creative mediums.
