Multicultural Skills

The UIC’s Total Being Model curriculum considers the development of global skills essential for the rapidly changing 21st century. Communication technology has reshaped the world and how people interact. McLuhan’s Global Village vision is certainly a reality where in a world close to meet the 8 billion population, people who have access to instant communication can enjoy the benefits of connectivity disregarding any physical or language barriers. However, its is advantageous to be versed in as many languages as possible due to the easiness of connectivity and reach to other cultural groups and nations different from the individual. Thus, UIC students learn a language to facilitate this cultural exchange.

It’s important to highlight that the vast majority of UIC students are international and already speak a native language other than English, have already learned English at UIC or previously admitted to UIC and will learn a third language during their academic program.

Furthermore, UIC students celebrate International Cultural Day and together appreciate their rich diversity. This makes their in-class discussions and overall learning experience enriching. As a consequence of living in a post-pandemic society, some of the faculty members and students are in their native countries delivering courses online or taking classes online. This makes learning definitely a cultural experience. For instance, the Italian professor teaches Italian from her home town Cesena, in Italy, one hour away from Bologna.

As many more students join this transformational educational experience at United International College, they will add to the sample of students in the map below representing their home country.
