Exploring the Power of Media: UIC Students Go Behind the Scenes at WPLG Local 10

Hallandale, FL — At United International College (UIC), learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through immersive, real-world experiences, students are given the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders, explore professional environments, and envision their future careers. This commitment to experiential education was on full display during a recent visit to WPLG Local 10 News in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

A Journey Through Broadcast History

Upon arrival, students were warmly welcomed and introduced to the rich history of WPLG Local 10. The visit began with a compelling timeline presentation that highlighted key milestones in the station’s evolution, including ownership transitions and its role in covering major events impacting South Florida.

One particularly powerful moment in the presentation reflected on the impact of Hurricane Andrew. In response to the devastation caused by the storm, the station invested in generators to ensure uninterrupted broadcasting—demonstrating a deep commitment to keeping the community informed even during times of crisis. This story resonated strongly with students, reinforcing the critical role media plays in public safety and community resilience.

Inside the Newsroom: Where Stories Come to Life

Students then stepped into the heart of the station—the newsroom. Walking among reporters’ desks, they witnessed the fast-paced daily operations of a professional media environment. From story development to real-time collaboration, students gained insight into how news is researched, written, and delivered to millions of viewers.

The experience continued in the engineering department, where students met the Master Control Engineer. With enthusiasm and clarity, he explained the technical backbone of broadcasting, including programming, rundowns, and the coordination required to maintain seamless live transmission. His passion for the field was evident, as he thoughtfully answered every student’s question, turning curiosity into inspiration.

Live from the Control Room

One of the most exciting moments of the tour came as students entered a control room during a live noon newscast. There, they observed the director and producer orchestrating the broadcast in real time—issuing commands, coordinating the crew, and integrating content seamlessly into the show.

This behind-the-scenes access offered a rare glimpse into the precision, teamwork, and intensity required to deliver live television—an unforgettable experience that brought classroom concepts vividly to life.

Meeting the Faces of Local News

Following the broadcast, students had the opportunity to meet on-air personalities Annaliese Garcia and Eric Yutzy. Fresh off the set, they generously shared insights into their careers and the realities of working in broadcast journalism.

Annaliese Garcia, a proud University of Miami alumna, encouraged students to embrace challenges and step outside their comfort zones:

“Take the chance to step into the uncomfortable. Go where the opportunities are—even if it means starting in a small town.”

Her message resonated deeply, emphasizing resilience, adaptability, and courage as essential qualities for success in the industry. Students engaged in meaningful conversations with her, gaining valuable perspectives on career growth and professional development.

Weathering the Future: Innovation and Passion

The final stop of the tour brought students to the meteorology department, where they met meteorologists Brandon Orr and Brantly Scott. They shared their educational journeys, discussed the evolving role of artificial intelligence in forecasting, and reflected on their lifelong passion for weather.

Their enthusiasm was contagious as they described the excitement and responsibility of their work—particularly the importance of staying connected to the community and delivering accurate, timely information.

A Meaningful Exchange

The visit was made possible through the leadership of Mayte Padron, Director of Community Relations at WPLG Local 10, who emphasized the value of collaboration between institutions and media organizations:

“We take great pleasure in inviting groups like United International College to our news studio. As we show them what it takes to deliver the news to South Florida homes, we are also learning from them and how they consume news in the 21st century. It’s a mutually beneficial experience that we value tremendously.”

Faculty members Prof. Jack Rose and Dr. Deborah Mendez accompanied the students, further enriching the experience. Reflecting on the visit, Prof. Rose shared:

“The tour was exceptional, and I know the students had a great learning experience. Personally, it was exciting to speak with all those exceptional people who make up the Local 10 team since I have been an avid viewer the past 50 years. The knowledge and enthusiasm of our tour host added much to the tour. I think there are some students who might start thinking about a career in broadcasting.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Experiences like this exemplify UIC’s commitment to bridging academic learning with real-world application. This approach empowers students to explore their passions, build professional connections, and confidently pursue their career goals.

For many students, the visit was more than a tour—it was a moment of clarity, inspiration, and possibility.
